open BIM

What is openBIM?

The term openBIM is the concretisation of the idea of the BIM method in terms of working methods. At the centre are

  • information
  • collaboration
  • and communication

The information in the models is equally available to everyone and can also be read and interpreted by everyone. The LOI (Level of Information) and LOG (Level of Geometry) in the appendix of the BIM rules specify when which information is to be provided.

Collaboration takes place through the regular exchange of model data. This enables an up-to-date view of the planning status at all times. Collaboration is controlled by the BIM quality assurance of BIM project management and overall BIM coordination.

Communication is rethought in openBIM projects. Not only the open exchange of information and the new type of collaboration are part of open communication, but also the type of change management via the BCF comments (BIM Collaboration Format) and the use of CDEs (Common Data Environment, in accordance with ISO 19650) enable a completely new unambiguity, single version of truth, in communication

To achieve all this, openBIM uses the open and standardised interface format of IFC (Industry Foundation Classes). ÖNORM A 6241-2 also requires the use of the IFC standard for the comprehensive, uniform, product-neutral and systematised exchange of data.

The advantages of openBIM are obvious:

  • Software independence and freedom of choice in the application of all project participants, and thus no competitive disadvantage due to specifications on application use
  • Long-term usability of the model data
  • Self-sufficiency of software-specific model information (transparency)

The adjacent graphic provides a good overview of how openBIM and the holistic use of the BIM method can be categorised across all trades:

little BIM: BIM island, BIM use only in individual disciplines

BIG BIM: BIM integration in all disciplines

closedBIM: closed solution, use of one software (family)

openBIM: open solution, interchangeability via various BIM-capable software

The highest level of development is therefore reached when all participants work in the BIM method and use IFC as a means of exchange.
