The Pottendorf line is part of the Pontebbana axis (southern route) as an important section of the trans-European transport link between the Baltic Sea and the Adriatic (Baltic-Adriatic corridor), and is part of ÖBB's core network. As part of the project, the extension of the Pottendorf line between the stations of Wampersdorf and Untereggendorf will be carried out, thus completing the extension programme between these stations. With the completion of the Ebenfurth section, the renovation and extension of the Pottendorf line will be completed in its entirety.
In addition, the direct connection of the Raaberbahn to the Pottendorf line is to be realised by means of a new loop track ("Schleife Ebenfurth").
